Though he’s not a native St. Louisian, Mike Gibbons has lived in Kirkwood since he moved there with his parents from Massachusetts, graduating from Kirkwood High School in 1942. Since then, he has continually enjoyed all that Kirkwood has to offer, especially the strong community it provides.

So when Mike decided it was time to move to an independent retirement living community, he and his children chose to stay in Kirkwood at Bethesda Gardens.

Enjoying Kirkwood’s Social SceneMikeGibbns_CN9F8307

The central location of Bethesda Gardens appeals to Mike’s active lifestyle. “I really enjoy being in the center of town and being able to walk to a variety of restaurants, as well as the Kirkwood Public Library,” he says. “It keeps me active.” Mike also enjoys playing the piano and spending time at the local YMCA, exercising and socializing. Staying in Kirkwood also makes it easy for him to spend time with his family nearby, by visiting his son and daughter and catching up with his grandchildren.

Volunteering in Kirkwood’s Community

A decorated military veteran, lawyer, and involved community volunteer, Mike continues to be an active member of the Kirkwood community. He belongs to the Kirkwood-Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce and volunteers at St. Luke’s hospice facility. In 2012, he was named a winner of the Lieutenant Governor’s Senior Service Award, and received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Chamber in 2005.

Expanding His Social Calendar at Bethesda Gardens

Mike enjoys participating in Bethesda’s morning exercise programs and happy hour events. “I really like participating in the social gatherings here, getting to know other residents and having company to share meals and lively discussions,” he says.

In addition, his love of reading not only takes him to the public library to read biographies and political stories, but Mike is also member of Bethesda Gardens’ book club, where he is active in the discussion of the club’s book choice with fellow residents.

For someone who has been involved with and lived in Kirkwood his entire life, Mike wouldn’t want to be anywhere else than Bethesda Gardens.
